Watch Your Lawn for Grub Damage

Help! My Lawn Is Peeling Back Like Carpet!

We are starting to see grub damage on some lawns in our service area. We’ve been getting calls from homeowners who have brown patches of dead grass that peels back very easily. In most cases, grubs have eaten the roots of their lawn, causing these patches. Upon further inspection, we are actually finding grubs still feeding at the surface. If you are experiencing similar conditions on your lawn, it is important to take care of it fast, as grubs can kill a large portion of your lawn in a matter of days. If you need help, please contact That Weed Guy right away. We will personally visit your lawn and provide you with options and pricing.

Something is Digging in My Lawn!

We are also getting calls regarding animals, such as skunks and raccoons, digging in the lawn. Animals can detect the sounds of grubs feeding, making the grubs an easy meal. While the grubs may not exist in numbers high enough to damage your lawn directly, the damage done by the animals feeding on them can be severe. We can treat the lawn to reduce the numbers of grubs, ultimately reducing the amount of damage being caused by the animals.

My Garden is Covered In Shiny Beetles!

In other areas we are seeing vegetation being devoured by Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica, the adult stage of one variety of grub). These beetles can cause major damage to rose bushes and other decorative plants.

To control Japanese Beetles in your garden, there are many different products widely available at your local hardware store. Be sure to read the label and apply it according to the directions. Always remember to keep all chemicals and harmful substances out of reach of children.

Punxsutawney Phil Was Wrong!

Winter is Hanging on for Dear Life

If you remember Ground Hog’s Day this past February 2nd, the most famous ground hog, Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his hole and did not see his shadow, signaling an early spring. Apparently someone was blocking his sun. Winter is hanging on for dear life in northeastern Illinois, and according to the 10-day forecast, the best day we are going to see is day 10. The first day of Spring, March 20th, has a predicted high temperature of 23 degrees. Hang in there, because we are hoping for everyone’s sake that this dreadful weather will not last much longer.

Dreadful Winter Damage is Happening Now

As if the cold temperatures, snow, and ice weren’t annoying enough, many of our lawns were damaged by the snow plows during the most recent winter storm. Be sure to read up on this problem and several other causes of winter damage to your lawn on our winter damage page in the lawn problems section of

You Should Already Be Thinking About Crabgrass!

New Crabgrass Page Posted On

We’ve put all of our years of experience with controlling crabgrass into an information packed Crabgrass page in our Lawn Problems section on From germination dates, to the best control methods, to when you can overseed, we’ve attempted to answer all questions that a homeowner might have about crabgrass.

Now is the Time to Think About Crabgrass!

Even though it snowed 4-5″ today, you should already be thinking about how you are going to control the crabgrass in your lawn this season. After mid-to-late April, a mere 2 months from now, if you haven’t already applied a pre-emergent, it may be too late. If we get warmer weather early in the spring, as we did in 2012, the amount of time you have to act could be reduced even more. Don’t hesitate.

Spring Is Almost Here!

We Hope You Had a Prosperous New Year!

That Weed Guy has been working hard this winter to find ways to continuously improve our services. We always try to exceed our customers’ expectations and uphold our “That Weed Guy” No Risk Guarantee (You must be completely satisfied with our results. If not, let us know and we will make it right or refund the entire cost of the application). Part of our process involves sending out a letter to each customer at the beginning of the season.

Prepay Letters Have Been Sent

We mailed our prepay letters late last week on the 21st of February. Our customers enjoy saving an additional 10% off of their entire season cost when they prepay for the entire season up front. Not only do our prepay letters give customers a chance to save money, but they also give us a chance to recommend services that would be beneficial to your lawn. For example, if a customer did not have a core aeration last fall, we can recommend it for this fall. While preparing prepay letters, we take the time to review each lawn’s services to make sure we are doing the best we can do for that lawn.
